Root Canals

Over the years, through media and word of mouth, root canals have gotten a bad reputation. They are, however, not as invasive as they used to be, and can be a quick, single-visit procedure that can help patients get out of pain and discomfort quickly and easily.

Root canals are necessitated by inflammation or death of the pulp chamber, which includes the nerve in the middle of the tooth. Decay, as well as trauma (such as a fractured tooth), may be a reason the patient needs to undergo a root canal. The procedure involves using instruments to remove the tissue from the middle of the tooth, and seal the tooth. Sometimes, inside the core of the tooth, there is not enough blood supply to get antibiotic treatment in there, and the tooth doesn't have the ability to heal that tissue. This is when a root canal may be needed—to prevent the tooth from becoming infected and causing further problems. When you cannot get enough antibiotics in the tooth to allow the body to heal, the dentist may as well remove it.

After a root canal has been completed, often Dr. Rykard will place a dental crown over the tooth. This is done for a number of reasons. First, a tooth that has had root canal therapy will be more brittle than a natural tooth with dental pulp tissue and nerves, so the dental crown can provide additional protection. Second, the chewing force on the back teeth can be strong, so crowns are often considered in the back to keep teeth from cracking, or requiring extraction well after a root canal has been completed.

Patients are completely numb during the root canal treatment, and will be able to use over-the-counter medications to address any discomfort they may feel after the procedure. While root canals can sound painful, they are done to relieve pain. Dr. Rykard has personally undergone root canal procedures, as well as other dental work, and has the compassion and understanding to work with his patients to help them feel comfortable and at ease while having dental work done.
Dr. Rykard repaired a messed up procedure by another dentist and did root canals, crowns and dentures for me. I am so happy, I can eat again without pain and can smile again without being embarrassed. I would highly recommend Dr. Rykard, he is the best dentist I have ever been to.
